Tariq App

Permission-based location sharing

Problem statement

Hajj brings millions of Muslims from around the world to Saudi Arabia, with every step of the ritual following a set schedule. Huge numbers of people move between the same places at the same time.

Pilgrims span every age group. Elderly people and children in particular can find it hard to keep track of their group in such crowds, and getting separated is common.

There was no modern way to find someone quickly once they were lost. Families and groups spent anxious hours searching for each other.

Something had to change, so that pilgrims could focus on their religious duty instead of worrying about their loved ones.

Solution

We had already built location technology for other products. We adapted it into a light, dedicated app for finding people in crowds.

Constant GPS use normally drains a phone’s battery quickly. Tariq is engineered to keep battery use low, so it can run through long days away from a charger.

The name comes from the Arabic word for “morning star”, the star travellers once followed to find their way in the dark. Tariq does the same for your loved ones.

How it works

Family members share their location with each other, only with permission. When someone goes missing, open the app to see where they are.

Background tracking keeps locations up to date even when the app isn’t open, and a guided radar points the way until you reach them.

Tariq was well received by Muslims around the world, featured in mainstream news, and written about by the people who relied on it.
